The Candy Room – in Melbourne, Australia – boasts what I think is the most innovative shop design that I have ever seen!
Remember your old colouring-in books? This is the type of minimalism that even a child can fully appreciate. There is an innate level of understanding in the concept that throws you back to childhood upon crossing the threshold, and reminds you that – yes – you CAN be that kid in the candy store once more.
Check out this article, from Taxi, that goes into more detail about the design and designers. And the best way to sell this concept to the store owners? Just tell them you’ll be able to save them squillions on painting costs!

Neil Duerden calls himself a “Mac monkey”. Being of a similar species myself I understand the power of the pixels. Neil has found a way to harness that power and meld it so beautifully with intense colour and light and movement.
His work has been embraced within the commercial world, but couldn’t you just see something like this on your wall? Or, at the very least, on your desktop? Go on!

Did you know there is beauty in an onion? If you plant some onions (or spring onions) and then wait. And wait. And wait. You wait until the plant is fully grown, through it’s productive and “useful” season. Then you wait some more…past the time when sensible society suggests uprooting the plant to make way for something new.
You keep waiting because you know there is something good around the corner, even though the rest of the world can’t yet see it. Then, suddenly, it blooms…one by one the tiny flowers appear.
Who knew something so stunningly beautiful could emerge out of a stinky, old, has-been onion plant…given time? God did.
Bit like us really.

This is the kind of website that makes me fall in love with colour all over again! I am totally in my happy place with every blog post that Jessica (design seeds) shares. I have even taken some of her colour palettes and created a montage of them along my office wall. [Huge sigh of contentment]. Thanks Jessica!
From Jessica’s website:
my love (okay…passion) for color sprouted at a very young age. i played with color markers (my favorite colors of course) as action figures and loved melting crayolas into different hue sculptures. we would go to the detroit auto show every year, and i would cut up all the brochures and create my first mood boards by collaging the images to cover my bedroom door. fast forward decades later…having worked as a car designer, shoe designer, color & material specialist and forecaster (hmm…could see that all coming from my earliest days)…my love of color was actualized through my biggest joy of life … my daughter’s name {Ruby Joy}.
beginning in art school (and throughout my design career), i have journaled color palettes and inspiration. the earliest of my journals were compiled in a sketchbook with pantone chips and dymo label callouts…the design seed blog is a modern interpretation of my original journals. it is my pleasure to share with you my journey and inspiration as i continuously track and forecast emerging colors and palette combinations.

I know so little about the creations which appear in the World of Wearable Art (WOW) Awards Show, but what I do know is that they are fantastical, whimsical and gloriously larger-than-life.
No exception to this is the work of Susan Holmes. Susan is 70 years young and her designs are stunning!
For more information about award-winning Auckland artist, Susan, and her amazing creation (“Firebird”, above), you can read the NZ Herald article from 15 Jan 2012.

Can you believe this photo is for real? Don’t believe me? Just try doing a Google Images search for “Danxia landform”. See? Told you! I think I have just found something else to add to my “must sees” in life.
This particular example of the Danxia landform is located in Zhangye, Province of Gansu in China, and is similar to other examples in the southeast and southwest of China…some have even been given World Heritage Site status!
The colour is the result of an accumulation of millions of years of red sandstone and other rocks. Wow!

There is something super-special about receiving a handmade gift. I love to make and give them, but – I have to say – I rarely receive them (hint, hint), and virtually all the handmade gifts that I have ever received are proudly on display in my office. I know how long it takes to produce something handmade, and so I highly value the time, thought and skill within the gift.
Just recently I received a lovely drawing (above) from a young friend of mine, Emily-Rose Fidecaro…budding artist…creativity fan. It is fascinating to observe E-R’s youthful enthusiasm and I will be interested to see if she carries that enthusiasm through her next few years of artistic discovery.
